                 THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD
By Mike Colonna
Traveling salesman Danny Galligher was carrying out his appointments traveling through small rural areas in Kansas. His sedan showed scars of thousands of miles on the road. He saw his customers by day and drove by night to his next appointments. One drizzly night Galligher was traveling  along a familiar stretch of road that would take him to his next meeting. It was  at midnight when he approached a sharp curve he saw an eerie sight. He was forced to slam on his brakes. Two young girls dressed in wet silk gowns were wandering directly down the middle of the road. His vision was blurred. Was he seeing things?
GALLIGER
What the hell?
His headlights zeroed in on the young girls. Their long hair was dripping and matted. They turned and faced his into his glaring headlights. They were shivering in the chill evening air. He grabbed a blanket from the back seat, he got out of his car to offer help.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
This should keep you warm,
THE GIRLS
Thank you sir, (they both whispered.)
As he placed it around their shoulders they whispered again.
THE GIRLS (CONT’D)
Thank you Mister. (Their voices were thin and sounded weak through the drizzling rain.)
GALLIGER
Just call me Mr. Galliger, Danny Galliger.
He invited them into his car.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
I can drive you to the nearest town, it shouldn’t be far.
They entered the rear passenger seats. And sat still.
Galliger tried to make small talk but heard no answers.
He would peek at his rear view mirror, their bodies were translucent, fading in and out of reality. They rode in silence.
After driving a few miles through the dense, dark forest, the lights of a small town appeared in the distance.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
Please tell me where you would like to get dropped off.
The one sister gestured that he turn on a dimly lit street.
They finally came to a dead end in front of a large two story home, the street was dimly lit until he reached the long winding driveway. Two hanging lanterns lit up the front of the home. All of the lights in the home were on shining brightly through each window.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
Is this where you’re parents live?
He looked in the back seat and both girls were gone. His mind was going wild, he searched the back seat, peered out the windows,
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
What the hell is going on?
He got out of the car, and walked up to the front door, rang the door bell. Immediately the large wooden door opened.
An elderly woman with a somber faced stood before him.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
I’m not sure if the two young ladies got home safely, (stuttering) I parked in the front of your home, looked back and they were gone.
OLD LADY
Don’t worry, come in.
GALLIGER
The funniest thing, I picked these two girls up in the middle of the night, they were freezing, we arrive at your home and they disappear.
OLD LADY
You thought you were bringing Kathleen and her sister Judy home.
GALLIGER
I never did get their names.

The old woman nodded sadly,
OLD LADY
Both girls never did make it home.
GALLIGER
I don’t understand.
OLD LADY
Can I get you a cup of coffee or tea.
GALLIGER
No thanks. I have to run. What happened to the girls.
OLD LADY
It was more than 25 years ago, the girls went to a high school dance, on the way home, they were sitting together in the back seat. The young boy driving fell asleep at the wheel, the car hit a tree and plunged into the river.
GALLIGER
How terrible.
OLD LADY
They all escaped, including the driver, but the two girls were trapped inside the car and it sank to the bottom.
GALLIGER
What a tragedy.
OLD LADY
You see every year since the accident, the two girls try to come back home. It’s been 25 years to the day, and I can still see their beautiful faces.
GALLIGER
Why are all of the lights in the house on?
OLD LADY
Today is the 25th anniversary of their deaths.
GALLIGER
Were you expecting them?
OLD LADY
Every year I hope, but every year on this night, someone like yourself knocks on my front door. It’s never them but someone like you. And they tell me the same haunting story of Kathy and Judy walking down the same road.
They got out of their chairs, the old lady walked through her living room where pictures of the two young girls were everywhere. She pointed out the picture of the girls dressed in the gowns they wore the night they died.
GALLIGER
They were beautiful.
The old lady showed Galliger to the door. Galliger drove to his hotel. Tossing and turning he could not come to terms of what he experienced. He left that morning looking forward to his first appointment. It was early, he decided to backtrack to the road and relive his meeting with the two young ladies.
As he drove, he noticed a sign which he missed the night before. A short distance from the town, he noticed a small dirt road that led him an unkept cemetery.
GALLIGER (CONT’D)
How did I miss this? (He wondered aloud.)
He got out of his car, and was attracted to small headstones dotting the burial ground. He came to two markers, side by side. Kathy and Judy. The area around the headstones was well kept. Two unmarked marble headstones stood out. They glistened in the chilling cold. As he approaced headstones he could not believe his eyes. The blanket he wrapped around the two girls, was till damp from the cold drizzle of the night, it was draped across the headstones. Galliger bent over to touch the blanket, it was till damp it was marked with wet grass that appeared to come from the nearby lake.
